Message compared to say 5W- X or 10W-X but if the second number 'X' is the same they have essentially the same viscosity at the tested temp. per API testing requirements.

Thus the 0W-40 synthetic oil compared to the 10W-40 dino oil will have a lower cold viscosity but essentially the same viscosity when hot. Thus better flow at low temps but the same protection when warmed up.

The syn oils because of their consistent size molecular chemistry can be taylored to fit many more viscosity spread ranges than the dino oils with less or no VI (viscosity improver) additives thus are a better choice if a wide variance in viscosity numbers is selected.

Note: Dino oils that have a wide spread in the viscosity numbers like 20W-50 compared to 10W-30 have more VI additive in the can and the less base oil. If using Dino keep the spread close. With syn oils there is no concern here as noted above.
